The Meaning Behind Different Colours of Egg Yolks

The Meaning Behind Different Colours of Egg Yolks by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

After 12 long years throughout my 20s and early 30s of having only coffee in the morning I began enjoying a proper breakfast. Mostly eggs everyday. So now after another 10 years I came to know quite a bit about eggs. In Canada and the U.S the ones I would get all had yellow yolks. Then in Egypt a couple of years back I came across some tasty ones with darker yolks — between light and dark orange, which I fell in love with and stick to ever since. I had once briefly read that the darker the colour the healthier the egg and took it as an established truth. As it turned out, this may be true, though it’s not so black-or-white or that straightforward. More research was needed.

Now, the difference in the yolk colour lies in the diet as well as health of the chicken who laid them.

So what is known about the darker orange yolk — shown in the featured photo on the left — is that they are usually laid by pasture-raised hens. The colour of the yolk is an indicator of a healthy and well balanced diet. As explained in an article titled Egg Yolk: From Light Yellow To Deep Orange, Here’s What It Means:

“Since these pasture-raised hens are allowed to roam outdoors, their diet is supplemented by fresh grass and nutritious omnivorous foods like worms, beetles, grasshoppers, and spiders. This diet is rich in carotenoids, which gives living organisms a red or orange colour”.

Speaking of, carotenoids are mentioned in an earlier article here on One Lucky Soul: Why Flamingos Are Pinkish-Orange. As they are the reason behind the peculiar colouring of the birds who feed on shrimp and molluscs which contain these strong coloured pigments.

Nevertheless, hens don’t necessarily have to be pasture-raised to lay eggs with dark orange yolks. Any hen can lay such an egg if fed nutritious food.

Further, according to a 2014 Study published by the Journal of Food Science, darker yolks typically contain even more omega-3s and vitamins compared to average lighter yolk eggs.

Then we have the yellow yolk, which happens to be the most common — shown on the right. The lighter colour is the result of a vegetarian diet — corn, alfalfa, and beans that are rich in a pigment called xanthophylls, which is responsible for giving plants and animals the colour yellow.

Last and possibly also least, pale yellow yolks. Foods low in xanthophylls, such as wheat , white cornmeal, or barley result in laying eggs with pale yellow, or in some cases even white yolks. Those remain my least favourite as they feel as though they have been washed from the inside or diluted with water. Fortunately, I rarely encounter them, neither in North American nor in Egypt.

Different colours of eggs from different breeds of chicken.
How visually appealing.

While it seems the darker yolks do provide rich nutrients and vitamins, it does not mean the nutritional value of the egg changes based on the colour of the yolk. No matter the colour, in fact, the same amount of protein and fat are provided. Yet, after this full decade of experimenting — around 3650 days with three eggs on the first 7 years then two — one can safely conclude that orange-yolk eggs are my favourite taste, texture, and consequently also experience of all the rest.

There is something vibrant and radiant to it, and it goes beyond mere colour.

This very radiance may actually be felt in the below photo of the homemade Swisstralian CheeseBurger topped with a runny orange egg, prepared as a New Kreation on the Red Sea beach just a few months ago.

The reason I finally wrote about the topic despite being on my mind for a while is that for the past couple of months the same brand that delivered the orange yolks ( بيض سرور - العالمية ) now sells yellow ones instead. I called their customer support number but no one answered... so far. Eventually, the orange colour returned, yet it was me who once again moved base to Dahab — where egg yolks are yellow.

The more selfish reason behind choosing not to write about it sooner lies in the fear that everyone will go buy these eggs, leaving nothing for myself. Ha-Ha. But the actual truth, however, is that most people do not care at all about such a thing. They don’t even notice different colours exist. For them the colouring is for the outside shell, white and brown. Try it for yourself; go ask around and see. Every now and then one person would be aware, and, unsurprisingly, they would favour the darker yolks — as it just occurred with a reader who commented on this article.

So, I
’m not that selfish after all. Then again, I am sharing all the acquired knowledge with you herein. You’re welcome. Speaking of, here is something else I came to learn throughout the years.

The repetition equally taught me how to synchronise the timing of the runny egg with each bite. Meaning, how to keep the eggs cooking for a specific amount of time, that the yolk isn’t too runny nor too solid. I have found the perfect balance — one that allows 2-3 seconds between each bite into the yolk before the yellow juice spreads out and likely fall right into your plate (hopefully). In order not to have to lick the plate later nor waste any [single drop] of the eggs, I cook them à la seconde just to remain solid for those 2-3 seconds following the bite. The next bite carries on the work, then probably the third finishes it. One can always insert the entire yolk into their mouth and get it over with, but naturally two-three-3 separate average bites feel more enjoyable.

I’ve been also meaning to particularly share the above information for quite some time. But you can imagine how challenging it is to be mid biting into your mouthwatering meal — and utterly enjoying it — while also capturing the moment on camera while the yolk is still holding on to itself, as seen in the above photo. Experience is truly the best of teachers.

Eggselent

Speaking of lessons, the following is yet another bit of knowledge about eggshells which was acquired as a teenager in school:

There are many things that tend to influence our actions and behaviours in life. Usually we are unaware of why we do what we do, but sometimes we are be able to trace the connection using memories often imbedded in the subconscious.

Now, ever since starting to make eggs many moons ago I’ve been using the simple hack to remove broken pieces of eggshells from the bowl or pan. Rather than digging your fingers in the raw egg to chase them which may be a tad tricky, or using a spoon which may be a wee bit easier and faster, I use the rest of the half shell to scoop them out. This has been the easiest, fastest, and most convenient way as the past 15 years of almost daily eggs for breakfast have shown. It is no myth yet it is no common knowledge either.

But then so what? There are many websites and chef videos stating the same. Well, what is remarkable in my case is that I first learned such useful trick in a chemistry class as a young boy at school — even more moons ago. The teacher was most probably discussing the chemical compositions of eggshells and the elements they contain like Calcium Carbonate and maybe also the Ph level inside the egg. He then shared with us kids the golden nugget as a real-life example from nowhere other than the kitchen: “… And that is why pieces of eggshells are attracted to each other even after cracking, that you can pick the small broken pieces using the larger part.” Aha.

Out of the magnanimous amount of information we were required to learn by heart during school, many if to most tend to evaporate after graduation. Some little things, however, like the magnetic property of eggshells here seem to stick to my memory — pun intended.

Over three decades later today I still remember the chemistry teacher whenever scooping in the kitchen. Merci Monsieur.

Following this latest decade, I now concur with the fact that having a decent breakfast is truly one of the healthiest and most eggsquisitely eggceptional things you can do to your body and your whole day.

Though before we say Adios, I feel compelled to share that the honest reason I started having and enjoying breakfast is the fact that by then I had stopped waking up to the piercing sound of alarms at insanely early hours of the day. So depending on the time of waking up, I eat two or three hours later, be it at 10 or noon, which is more like a brunch. To be hungry as soon as you wake up, knowing that you have to shave/wear makeup, get dressed, beat traffic, and show up at work on time at 7 or 9 am, sounds like an impossibility. If you can manage that, big Kudos to you. I remember lacking the appetite, at least for a full and proper breakfast. So coffee it was. Grateful these days are long gone, and so is my body and entire being.

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper.

Eating Cows’ Trotters — كوارع

Eating Cow’s Trotters — كوارع by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soulكوارع

My first memory of “kawareaa”, or cows’ trotters, as a young boy in Egypt was that it was aphrodisiac food. I learned that from Arabic movies, not from home, as we never made it, hence I had never tasted or even seen it. I can say the same about brains and testicles, both are consumed in Egypt among other areas. Also the fact that for 20 long years “home” was a five-star hotel — since my father was a General Manager — had certainly limited our exposure to such kind of food. “It’s good for your knees”, they would repeat about kawareaa in the movies. Considered of lower quality cut, cattle’s feet are usually consumed by the less fortunate. Ironically, my own experience only took place after dropping the meats almost five years ago.

In Western cuisine the trotters are not included in the common cut of beef, which only recognises shanks, and are not consumed as much. The cut, though, is often included as part of the beef shank.

But in many other regions and cultures around the world, like Egypt, it’s a different story. They are actually part of various traditional dishes in Asian, African, French, Caribbean, and South American cuisines — even considered a delicacy. Whether from Zimbabwe, Uganda, Pakistan, Indonesia, Morocco, Turkey or Egypt, Googling “Cow’s Trotters/Cows Trotters/Cows’ Trotters/Cow’s Trotter/Cow Trotter/Cow Trotters” will lead you to many different international recipes, showing how widespread the phenomenon is.

Other than cattle, the trotters of goat, sheep, and pigs are cooked in similar ways and are equally consumed.

On a similar note, chickens’ feet, too, are edible. In Jamaica, for instance, they constitute the main ingredient of a traditional soup. On the other side of the world in China, chickens’ feet are everywhere: Deep fried, in soups, dim sum and stews, and are even sold seasoned and packaged as snacks. So it seems humans are not that selective when it comes to eating animals’ feet.

An exotic dish I actually cooked twice — while living alone on a Red Sea beach for two and a half years — was the 28-ingredients Louisianian Jambalaya. The history and recipe can be found in New Kreation: Jambalaya with Salmon and Shrimps

Health wise, bone marrow is known to be packed with protein, calcium, phosphate and magnesium; along a quite a high percentage of fat — about 96 percent. When cooked, the resulting broth is a nutrient-dense liquid full of vitamins, proline, gelatin, and minerals. Some of the health benefits of bone marrow include helping build the overall immunity, a reason why it’s a common old-fashioned remedy against the flu.

Due to the gelatin it contains, bone marrow alleviates joints pain while promoting healthy bones. For the same reason, it is said, it keeps the skin healthy and hair shiny as well as reduces wrinkles.

Bless the Internet, as I was writing this piece, an article titled A Bone a Day Keeps the Doctor Away? posted by the Neuroscience News and Research page I follow on Facebook appeared in my feeds. I have taught myself how to get used to these synchronicities, so I stopped registering and labelling such occurrences as “random”, resulting in much less head-scratching. What I do is thank the creative writing gods for their constant support and get on it.

As for the science article, it reviews a new study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (ACS), which suggests that the use of ham bones to make broths and stews could have a positive impact on cardiovascular health. It also explains why simmering animal bones is regarded healthy in slightly technical terms.

Historically, bone marrow is considered one of humanity’s earliest super foods. Apart from the widespread notoriety of being an aphrodisiac, cow foot stew is also recommended as a hangover cure. So there was some truth to the old Arabic movies after all — it was always seen served to newlyweds on their first day together or even on their wedding night. You know, because the hanky panky requires energy and calories.

Again in Jamaica, the birthplace of reggae music, cow foot stew is a signature dish, usually served with broad beans. Remarkably, the consumption of feet in the Caribbean goes back all the way to the 1600s, when first created during the days of slavery. Because apparently plantation owners would take the best parts of the animals for themselves and leave the “fifth quarter” — head, feet, tail, internal organs and skin — for the slaves.

I couldn
’t help handling this stare and just gave them to him. Nommm

Back to my own experience with kawareaa, or lack of it more likely. I was in my early 30s when I moved to Canada and got into cooking. From how to properly marinate Sirloin steaks to preparing oxtail soup, which took me about four hours to make, it was a blast. This time of Renaissance was also when I began eating many of the vegetables I had one day as a child rebelliously decided I did not like and stopped eating.

Check my earlier article Arugula: The Healthy Ancient Aphrodisiac for more. Yes, I’m seemingly fixated on learning and writing about natural aphrodisiacs. Because why not.

Fast-forward to three years when I moved to the U.S and dropped the meats. ... I came to Cairo once and told Bassima, our long-time cook and former nanny, that I wanted to eat kawareaa.

Are you sure?” She asked. “I think it will be only for you and your dad” — excluding mother and sister [because kawareaa is too icky and yucky for them as it was for my late grandma among many other people].

What I came to learn from that first time we made kawareaa at home is that trotters contain no muscles or meat; instead, it consists of skin, tendons, and cartilage. When cooked — for a long time — the soft, chewy gelatinous tendons and skin become the tasty edible part, while broth is produced. But the real rich flavour comes from within the marrow. Similar to oxtail, it’s the reason why it requires hours to cook.

Also like oxtail, a dense, hearty soup often accompany kawareaa, which was how I had it the first time. I must say I did enjoy the experience, especially that, by that time, meat was something I ate on rare occasions. So apart from the richness, I equally enjoyed trying something new. It’s truly invigorating to be experimental. You see, if you like it, great; if not, then at least you know. Real win-win situations, which always remain educational. That’s a general life philosophy, not just about food.

A year later during another trip Bassima made kawareaa in fatta ( فتة كوارع ), which is a combination of rice, bread, garlic, vinegar, and yoghurt. This time as seen in the featured photo above, she kindly made both. And I devoured it all. Nom Nom Nom. One feels so energetic afterwards.

As I experimented with arugula after consuming it to test the claim of the plant being an aphrodisiac, this time I also engaged in coitus after the meal. In fact, the young woman and I both had kawareaa, but then we totally passed out, for like an hour or so. Thing is, we had been drinking wine before, so the hearty meal came in and knocked us out. Upon revival, though, we went at it like beasts. So to report, the sex happened to be amazing, because you do feel the gained energy. Of course, the Placebo Effect could have very well affected our performance. Mayhap a certain degree of both were equal partners in the equation. Hm, I kind of miss that wild passion.

What Dahab the Lab left from the first two golf-sized bones

I have learned from my late Cocker Spaniel Caramella and others that dogs love marrow bone. In fact, it is one of the popular flavours for treats. So after finishing the whole kawarea meal I kept the bones for Dahab, but then forgot about them. At some point during the evening while at the kitchen he casually stood up on his hind legs against the counter, trying to reach the plastic container with the bones. He never gets up like that; the scent of the marrow bones must had been tickling his nose. Before I reached the counter he had already managed to grab the biggest two in his mouth and back down to devour them on the kitchen floor. I just let him enjoy and went to get the camera, as I kept the other three for the following day.

Then and there I was once again reminded by how Caramella wouldn’t leave the kitchen unless most of the bones have disappeared. Sometimes while cleaning the house, say a couple of weeks later, I would find a piece of leftover dried-out bone under the bed or carpet. So when Dahab tried to exit the kitchen with them in his mouth, probably to go enjoy them somewhere more comfortable like the living room, I refused and forced him to get back in. A couple of minutes later and they were totally annihilated. Ploof!

After all that was recounted, my sister thinks I’m weird. “So you don’t usually eat normal meat or chicken and then you eat kawarea and liver,” she exclaimed more than once.

I tell her that I’m doing it for the sake of experience, like a cultural experience gained through my travels. To also entice my senses while occasionally messing around with my taste buds and entire nervous system. I’m also sharing a meal with the doggo as our ancestors did in the wild. OK, fine, I am weird.

*EDIT 2025:

My sister had become a dedicated carnivore and kaware3 became a delicacy she truly enjoys. Ta-Da.

Why Some Women Point Their Feet When Aroused

Whenever writing about a heavy topic or scattered between multiple pieces, I sometimes let myself drift. First, as a break. Second, to stir up the creative juices, which helps with any blocks. And finally, just to see what happens. I still create, sometimes even write, but the topics end up being of a more light-hearted nature, allowing some balance into the equation. The following article was inspired by a lustful and stimulating recent encounter.

Have you ever noticed how some aroused women sensually point their feet and toes like a ballerina? Some of us did wonder about this appealing form of body language, which many men have a fondness for. For them, it’s a clear indicator of the
deep engagement and intense physical sensation felt by the women, that they are truly into it. Let alone how it seems to be associated with femininity and seductiveness.

Being a personal turn-on I was curious to know more. And as usual, bless the Internet, the questions and answers are found right there on various websites and forums.

Let me first state that feet-pointing is not to be confused with another sign of heartfelt sexual arousal, toe-curling. Pointing involves stretching the calves muscles while extending ankles, feet and toes forward. This appears to be more natural, elegant, and graceful than the out of control, seizure-like clenching and curling. Nevertheless, a toe-curling orgasm remains highly sought after.

But in fact, feet/toes pointing is not solely linked to sex or porn. For it goes deeper than that as it’s related to beauty and aesthetics. It is actually seen in photographs of nude or sports models who almost always do it in order to appear more appealing and desirable. The main reason the feet are pointed is because it makes the leg looks longer, hence younger and more attractive.

Essentially, this “beauty standard” is why high heels exist in the first place. It is also why women still wear them even when they clearly aren’t that comfortable.

It is worth nothing that feet pointing is not a female-only phenomenon. Some males, too, experience it during sexual intercourse and while orgasming. Though among men, toe-curling remains more common than the ballerina-like pointing.

During sex, this feminine “en pointe” as it’s called in ballet terms is usually seen when women are feeling ecstatic and almost out of control. One position displaying the feet’s curved arches with toes pointing forward is when they are lying on their backs with legs up and apart whether straight-out open, over the shoulders, or with knees bent inward while resting on the partner’s back. Another is when lying flat on their stomach with bent knees and upwards calves and legs.

Pointed feet do not show much when lying down with full body straight on the bed as there is not enough space for the feet to stretch. As for being on all four, it is not the easiest position to lift the calves, yet not impossible.

While it may differ in degrees, women point their feet during penetration, while receiving oral sex, as well as while masturbating.
And what a delightfully erotic sight that is.

It makes you want to suck their toes, which makes them point them even more,” wrote one commentator. It actually does.

I seriously thought I was the only guy alive that had this, man. I’m actually kinda relieved I’m not the only one,” wrote another.

Nom Nom Nom and a big juicy Thank You for the inspiration

In general, gestures with our feet are a powerful form of body language

. It is no wonder that many are drawn to feet as they find them particularly sexy. Also that foot/toes jobs, freaks, and fetishes exist in abundance. In actuality, Foot Fetishismalso known as Foot Partialism or Podophilia, is the most common form of sexual fetishism for otherwise non-sexual objects or body parts.

As you may have guessed, Foot Fetishism, is way more prevalent among men than women. Perhaps the very fact that women’s feet are usually soft and smooth and more beautiful looking — even more lickable, suckable, edible — has something to do with it. But that remains subjective. Or plainly, perhaps because men are natural perverts. You will never find a woman asking a man to send her a pic of his feet. Ha. Write me back if you do.

While women feet get lots of attention, their legs as well get their fair share. Why Japanese Females Have Bowlegs is an earlier piece, which surprisingly became the most read on One Lucky Soul.

And on a parallel note, What’s the Story with Blue Balls (and Blue Vulva)? is another.

There is likewise the denser exposé The Intertwining of Music and Sexuality ― A Djembefola’s Tale.

Now to the essence.

There is no one single answer to why women [and some men] point their feet when sexually excited. A suggested idea is that it has to do with the tightening of the muscles, an involuntary tensing of myotonia; either during intercourse — when enjoying it — or right before and/or while achieving climax.

The more accepted reason for feet pointing [and curling] during heightened arousal is a neurological phenomenon called Motor Overflow. It is when intense nervous system activity triggers involuntary muscle spasms throughout different parts of the body, including the toes. Curiously, that is due to the proximity between the wiring for genitals and that for feet in the brain, resulting in this involuntary “twitch from the autonomic nervous system getting overloaded with signals.

Starting with neurological connections before the physical manifestation,
pointing the feet [or curling them] is the resulting response. And similar to other body twitches, it is natural, just that here it occurs in the context of sexual excitement.

A second related theory is Spinal Stimulation; a reason to stimulate blood flow to the lower body and genital area. The spinal cord, you see, acts as a central hub in the equation where signals from genitals and brain are integrated, thereby orchestrating sexual climax.

According to some women, pointing their feet helps them reach a better, more intense orgasm. So they learned how to point their feet as they get there — as a sort of self-conditioning.

Others mention that they cannot cum without stretching their muscles. And when the leg muscles are stretched, the ankles, feet and toes naturally point forward. It occurs either consciously or subconsciously.

An additional possibility could be related to aesthetics and self-image. Perhaps women who do point their feet/toes during sex have already
considered how desirable they look and are aware of the gained allure. In contrast, think of how flat, non-pointed feet with no arches would look like in a ceiling mirror above the bed when all is showing are flat heels. Based on prior observation, it could have stemmed from a premeditated conscious decision.

Not all women are toe-pointers. While for some the feet and toes remain unaffected by sex, the opposite occurs for others who show sloppy non-pointed feet — which inherently does not seem as seductive.

Having always been a fan without ever wording it out, over the years I came to observe a correlation between how sensual, provocative, and physically fit the women are and the likelihood of pointing their feet during intercourse. The healthier and more flexible, playful, seductive, the more likely they will do it. Believe it or not, this is only mildly related to the body weight and type.

A lot of it got to do with the mindset
— and Motor Overflow. A reminder of the fact that the whole essence of being sexy lies in the confidence coming from knowing that you indeed are.

As we have seen, feet/toes pointing is considered to be one of those unwritten rules of lust, beauty, and aesthetics. It is done by certain women to accentuate their sexual allure as well as to better the coitus and their orgasms — consciously in some cases and subconsciously in others.

Apart from the alluring, provocative visual aspect, for a significant number of men it’s an indicator that she is fully engaged into the experience and is out of control, which is what turns them on.

When I told the inspiring muse about this article, she eloquently shared: “For me, it’s an overwhelming involuntary response to pure pleasure and amazing chemistry sensations. Like a reflex.” What nimble and astute words. She also sent me the seductive middle photo above of her shapely foot in pink heels. Yummm.

Now we know.
Whether you have been swept off your feet or are head over heels, keep them pointed.

New Kreation: Grilled Salmon with Soy Marinade & Herbs

Grilled Salmon with Soy Marinade and Potatoes by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

As some of you may already know, the three years I spent in Toronto was when I sincerely got into cooking. I had a Word file with all the newly learned recipes which kept growing every day. From T-bone steaks, oxtail soup and veal stew, to different grilled salmon marinades, to various pasta recipes.

The following years in the U.S was when I dropped the meats yet kept the seafood and began cooking less — also eating less in terms of quantities. Needless to say, I lost two waist sizes. I still do cook, but not as much. In fact, the last New Kreation article, Onion-n-Garlic Pasta with Mussels and (Different) Herbs, dates back to November 2016, almost a year ago.

A few days ago I was in the mood to create something I haven’t made in a while. By skimming through that forgotten recipes file, the salmon was what spoke to me. On the way to the store to buy the fillet I remembered that it had definitely been more than two years since the last time.

I also had baby potatoes which work perfectly along the grilled fish.

Before the recipe itself, I even found the detailed, step-by-step salmon preparation in that file. Again, I was new to the whole thing and I am quite meticulous like that. As such, I’ll just share them here as they are.

Preparations:

Like most kinds of fish, the fresher the better. Choose salmon fillets which are over an inch thick. Thinner ones can easily flake and break. You can also go for the salmon steaks, which are slightly thinner and hence take less grilling time.

Clean the salmon by rinsing it under cold tap water. Then use paper towel to dry. Some people remove the skin, others like myself just leave it as it is.

Season with salt and pepper. Lemon can also be used. However, since lemon is included in this particular recipe, I do not add it as a seasoning. That is because too much lemon will "eat away" at the salmon.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 an onion (minced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 3 tablespoons of Soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard.
  • Basil, thyme, ground ginger, and peppercorn medley (to be added later).

Directions:

  • Combine all ingredients (except the herbs) together in a large bowl or glass container and mix well
  • Soak the salmon(s) for 15 minutes, then flip it on the other side for another 15. As mentioned, do not leave it in the marinade more than 30 minutes because of the lemon/salmon reaction.
  • Pre-heat grill to a medium heat and add oil, enough since salmon sticks easily. I have used non-stick pans when I had no grill and the difference is not that noticeable.
  • Add a piece of butter then the salmon. Some say add the skin-side-down first, which is something I tend to do out of habit. But I have used the other side first before and things went fine.
  • Flip it at least once every 4 or 5 minutes to prevent burning. You may choose to add the full marinade, some of it as I do, or discard it all together (for a lighter outcome).
  • Add basil, thyme, ground ginger, peppercorn medley.
  • Even though it depends from fire to the other and from fish to the other, but the average time for salmon grilling should not exceed 15 minutes. I would say starting from 9 up to 14/15 depending on the variables and one’s taste.
  • Serve straight away, with potatoes or anything else.

An alternative way for grilling salmon is to wrap it in aluminum foil which will keep the juices within. I have tried it a few times and enjoyed the practical fact that you just throw away the foil and end up having less dishwashing to do.

Buon Appetito!

Further Advice For Anyone With Longish Hair

Further Advice For Anyone With Longish Hair by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

When I was a teenager I knew a couple of girl friends who would occasionally use eggs for their hair. Needless to say, I was making fun of the idea... and the possible smell. As I matured I learned that eggs are indeed beneficial. But even with having long hair for a bit more than a couple of years between the age of 19 and 21, as a guy it never concerned me. Then when I regrew it 15 years later the tables happened to turn.

Eggs are widely known to be healthy for hair. Not just when consumed, but due to their richness in proteins, vitamins, and fatty acids, they are also used as hair treatment. The white is the source of protein while the yolk is high in sulphur. Eggs keep hair strong, prevent breakage, make it soft, as well as help its overall growth. While artificial products strip the hair of its natural oils, eggs help restore the natural oils present in the hair and scalp.

One thing about using them as a hair treatment is that you need to wash it afterwards with cold water and NOT hot water. Simply because they will be cooked right there on top of your head, ending up as with hairy scrambled eggs. Seriously.

Some of you may wonder why I would know or share such an information. Well, three years ago I wrote Advice For Men Who Still Have Hair, and the answer lies in the following Eggseptional Eggsperience which should be regarded as a unisex sequel.

My thinking was that I was in my late 30s and naturally my hair isn’t as it was at 19. So if I’ll choose to keep it long I might as well try to keep it healthy. That’s how I began my search into a field most men know nothing about.

As mentioned in the previous article, at some point I dropped the daily shampoo and began using one that is more medical and less toxic than usual brand names — Johnson’s Baby Shampoo followed. Slowly but surely results began to appear. The more I went natural in the following years, the more I wanted to try different alternatives. I did quite a bit of online research as I also asked a few women about their own experiences with the DIY homemade hair stuff. Then it was time to experiment.

First, it was coconut oil. It is healthy and all, yet may not be for every kind of hair. The quantity used remains key, though. Depending on why you are using it, for certain hair coconut oil should only be used by the drops rather than teaspoons; perhaps also just on the extremities rather than on the scalp.

After that I came across a mixture of yoghurt and honey. Not as a healthy breakfast or dinner, but as a hair mask — also called deep conditioning. You see how this dude is learning new terms. Yeah. So once a week you keep it on your hair (in a bun) for 20-30 minutes before washing with shampoo. Afterwards, I rinse it with black tea and ending it all with a conditioner from mid-length to the end.

The next step was to add and egg to the mixture. Again, you must wash with cold water if you want to stay safe. I cannot tell you exactly what would happen since I’m grateful to have read this warning beforehand. But obviously someone has done it since warnings of “lumps” and “pungent odour” exist. Yikes.

In actual fact, these are the very reasons why many people are afraid of using eggs in their hair, especially the odour. Who would blame them. But, cold water then shampoo just does it. So unless you want to try the egging for yourself, let us just listen to those who say they know.

Further Advice For Anyone With Longish Hair by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul
2 tbsp white yoghurt + 1 tbsp honey + 1 egg (+ coconut/olive oil)

The next addition to the yoghurt-honey-egg mix came the following week with coconut oil, just drops in my case. Different hair may require 1 teaspoon or 2 of coconut oil, or none at all. It’s something for you to figure out.

Another thing for you to figure out before using any kind of treatment is how naturally oily — or not — your hair is. Extra oily hair, for instance, won’t do well with coconut oil, or possibly any oil-based treatment; while on the other hand egg whites will remove excess oil from it. If it’s dry/normal hair then egg yolk should do the trick in moisturising it.

An alternative oil I found added to this mixture is olive oil, which I still have yet to try. I’m not sure if it will be in addition to the coconut oil or it has to replace it. Experimenting is the only way to find out. Always start with small doses and see how it goes. Ask women how it could be pretty annoying ending up with oily, greasy, weighted-down hair when you were trying to do the very opposite.

After four DIY treatments over the course of one month I can already see that my hair got thicker and looks healthier. The observation started when one day I gripped my hair in a ponytail to dry it after shower as I normally do and felt the mass has increased. There is also an added healthy shine and volume to it. Another day later I was brushing it and could feel something heavy underneath the back of my neck which was none other than the regained weight of the hair I kind of forgot about.

Now Good Luck with your own experimentation. Hopefully I’ll write the next hair article in another three years.

The Dark Side of Black Friday: Madness of a Lost Society

The Dark Side of Black Friday: Madness of a Lost Society by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

What you were about to watch in this three-part micro documentary is mainly a byproduct of the early work of Edward Bernays, the father of public relations — or modern advertising. The Jewish, Vienna-born man was the nephew of Sigmund Freud and who, since the 1930s, has worked with major corporations of manufacturing and advertising, politicians, and the CIA.

Unfortunately, however, the video(s) were one day taken down and cannot be found anywhere online. I will leave the article as it is, just minus the documentary.

Bernays considered the masses to be a bewildered herd driven by dangerous, chaotic, and irrational primitive forces which needed to be guided and contained. As we can see from the zombies in the videos, as well as all around us, the man had his reasons to believe so.

Bernays combined the ideas of Crowd Psychology or Mob Psychology with his uncle’s school of thought. He had a crucial and successful role in manipulating the masses by using their inner desires and fears to engineer public consent. The American citizen was then redefined as a ‘consumer’ and corporate greed was incepted, while Bernays became rich and famous in the process. He was later named one of the 100 most influential Americans of the 20th century by Life magazine.

That said, the modern day ideology of controlling the masses has been around as early as the late 1920s with Sigmund Freud and the Psychoanalytic movement. It was then carried on and later developed by his daughter Anna and nephew Bernays.

“We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. …In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons…who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.”
– Edward Bernays, Propaganda

Interestingly, Black Friday is not the only holiday brought to you by consumerism. MoreHallmark Holidays like St. Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Grandparents Day, and Sweetest Day among others were solely invented for commercial purposes. Even the idea behind the engagement ring turned out to be a total scam. Yet, the general populace usually follows what the dominating small number of persons who understand come up with. In that regard, nothing has changed much in North America since the mid-Twentieth Century.

More about the topic of mind control, the history of propaganda, and the role of the media can be found in this earlier exposé of mine, Mass Control and The Redefinition of Freedom. Also in the eye-opening 2002 award-winning BBC documentary, Century of the Self, which is thoroughly covered in the piece.

And here are some wacky Black Friday Videos.

The Dark Side of Black Friday: Madness of a Lost Society by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

When I first watched Madness of a Lost Society I found it quite ironic that Americans trample over each other to buy stuff the very next day they are celebrating being thankful for what they got. I was residing in Canada at the time, so couldn’t help but compare between both countries. Not the economy or what consumerism and corporate greed have done to the people, but only in terms of physical health, which has a direct impact on mental health and lifestyles.

So, Canada is healthier by ranking 33 on a 2007 Forbes list of fattest countries. The US ranks number 1, spending about 147 billion each year to treat obesity. Yes. One can easily spot the difference by taking a walk in the streets or going to the grocery stores.

According to data from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, two-thirds of U.S. adults today are overweight or obese; half are afflicted with chronic conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure which can usually be prevented with better diets.

Likewise, 17 percent of American children and adolescents aged 2—19 years (or 12.5 million) are obese, compared to only 5 percent in the 1970s.

In Canada, on the other hand, obesity rates have also increased since the 1970s. They have doubled, even tripled in some age groups to reach 24 percent for adults, and 12 percent for children (aged 5 to 17). Though according to this Joint Report From The Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Institute For Health Information, rates in Canadian children are still as low as 9 percent.

This Article may try to answer why in America fruits and
veggies happen to be more expensive than meat

One of those times my ex-partner and I crossed the borders from Canada to Buffalo, N.Y to attend The Wall by Roger Waters. Due to some bureaucracy by the borders we ended up by missing the concert. So we thought that since we made it in the U.S, we might as well eat something and went to a diner at a nearby casino.

The sizes there were a clear reminder that we were not in Kansas anymore and that Houston does have a problem — of both portions and people.

The next table were three morbidly obese women; small, medium and large, just like the Goldilocks Bears. The biggest, calling her papa bear for short, was attached to some breathing apparatus with wheels and had cheesy oily nachos drop on her triple GG breasts, which were serving as a bed tray. I’m not sure if she couldn’t feel the dripping or if she had reached a point of no return in not giving a hoot, knowing that we were in a very public place.

Stopping myself from staring too much, I began to wonder if the rest of the bear family didn’t care for the health of their papa or how she looked; since them, too, were busy devouring the fatty meals. Or, perhaps the sight was rewarding to their own self esteem. You know, with “I can keep eating as long as I don’t look like her” kind of thought.

It is genuinely hard not to feel bad when seeing such people. But when you think about it, you find it kind of strange to be so sick and unhealthy yet still choose to eat unhealthily. It’s like they get themselves into a self-destructive mode. On the short run, it may be easier, cheaper, and more convenient to eat junk. Simply because consistently eating fresh, healthy foods can be more expensive than fast or packaged foods for Americans, especially those living in lower-income demographics. But, it’s our own health and lives we’re putting at stake here, and choosing the healthy lifestyle will eventually always win.

Of course, the melted cheese and the temptation were so intense in Buffalo, that we ended up by ordering and feasting on those yummy nachos before heading back to Canada.

Years later when I roamed around the States, I realised that the huge portions, and the unhealthy eating habits in general, is a thing pretty much everywhere. Only when I reached the Westside in Los Angeles have the menus and lifestyles radically changed.

Then again, you can always get some McDonald’s ‘meat’ burger for less than $1 while a small bottle of water costs $2 and a salad costs $5! Do you really think the ones-in-charge want a healthy general population?

Other than the sensible combo of exercising, sleeping well, and reducing stress, there are some things to do which could sincerely help Americans get back in shape.

One, is introducing healthy meals to kids at school, like Europe and Japan.

Since a staggering 28% of American adults do not know how to cook, a second solution I would suggest is to learn how to. When you do not cook, your food options are significantly limited and it gets boring after a while. Regarding well-being, you are certainly going to find it harder and/or pricier to stay healthy.

A third is dropping the number of doughnuts shops throughout the country. Simply because between every doughnut shop and the next, there is a doughnut shop.

An additional solution may lie in reducing the gargantuan portions available in most eateries.

New Kreation: Mussels and Potatoes

New Kreation: Mussels and Potatoes by Omar Cherif, One Lucky Soul

Almost two years ago during Thanksgiving in Venice Beach, I experimented with Onion-n-Garlic Pasta with Mussels. I have made it a few times since then and it never fails to satisfy.

Today I was yearning for some novelty, so cooking seemed to be a convenient option. I bought pre-cooked mussels and made them for dinner along, not pasta, but potatoes. As usual, I skimmed through whatever I found online about “potatoes and mussels”, reassessed the situation according to what I do and don’t have, then closed all tabs and proceeded to kreation.

Directions:

  • First cut 5 small potatoes in quarters — Yukon/Red Gold, Fingerling, Russet or any potatoes — and boil them in a few inches of water.
  • During this time cut 1 green onion, 3 garlic cloves and 1/4 yellow (any colour) bell pepper.
  • About 10 minutes before the potatoes are ready, add 1 tablespoon of unsalted — or salted — butter to a skillet on medium high. Add the green onion, garlic, and bell pepper. Stir for about 3 minutes until softer. Then add 1/4 cup (4 tbsp) of rosé wine — white would also do — and 3 tbsp of water, bring to a simmer, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add 1/2 lbs of mussels to the mixture, basil, thyme, peppercorn medley, salt and pepper, a dash of Soya, stir and cover for 4-5 minutes or until they are ready.
  • Finally squeeze half a lemon on the yummy outcome and add it on top of the boiled potatoes. You can heat it all for another minute before serving.

Bon Appetit, les p’tits amis.

This is such a healthy, simple, and filling meal. I’m so impressed by the outcome, as I’m quite full but don’t feel any heaviness. It’s also incredibly tasty and versatile. You can actually pretty much add any other veggies or herbs which you feel would work. Some of the options I read about but didn’t have or chose not to use were dry chili pepper, white/red onions, chives, parsley, dill, cilantro, zucchini, spinach, diced/chopped tomatoes, olives, eggs, cheese. Also, butter is a personal preference and it could be replaced by olive oil and the potatoes could be roasted.

In addition to all that, mussels and potatoes are relatively cheap. You may not believe that this exquisite meal costed less than $6. True story. I’m probably having it again soon since I still have potatoes.

New Kreation: Quinoa with Brown Rice and Garlic

New Kreation: Quinoa with Brown Rice and Garlic by Omar Cherif, One Lycky Soul

The following is the first addition to the New Kreation series since the last time I was in Egypt and cooked that Calamari Catch. The reason is mainly because I have been residing in a hotel lately and don't have a full kitchen. Last night, however, I made a simple dish which I believe is worth sharing.

So it's basically quinoa with brown rice and garlic added to a skillet with 2 tbs of water until it heats in a few minutes. I would normally make my own quinoa, but my cousin had left me a box of those organic Seeds of Change pouches before travelling so I might as well use them.

Add red or green onions — I used 1/4 of a white one which was in the fridge before being reminded by why other colours may be lighter.

Then add 1tbs of extra virgin olive oil, 1.5 teaspoon of Dijon mustard, 1 teaspoon of almond butter, basil, thyme, salt and peppers, plus some tomato salsa on the side. Et voila, me amigo.

Simple, fast, filling, cheap, and healthy.

What’s the Story with Blue Balls (and Blue Vulva)?

Blue Balls by SimplyAddictive. http://simplyaddictive.deviantart.com/art/Blue-Balls-178760571 - What’s the Story with Blue Balls (and Blue Vulva)?, One Lucky Soul

Once while working in a hotel in my mid 20s, a reception girl passed out in the back area. I was the only one there and proceeded to carry her and put her on a chair. A colleague helped out before we called the hotel doctor to come check up on her.

This was maybe an hour before the shift ends, and we agreed that she’ll leave then and I will take her home. Her house was pretty far, so by the time we got there it was already dark. Then, the girl passed out again right there on the seat next to mine.

It was a remote area where I parked the car. I then held her hand while calling her name, trying to gently wake her. At a certain moment I sensed that she might be faking it.

Still, the 22-year-old girl had long hair and legs and looked exceptionally seductive in that short uniform dress. The whole situation of me being her ‘boss’ and her being so vulnerable somehow turned me on — the high possibility that she could be faking it so that something would happen added a certain tabooistic-teenage excitement to the whole ordeal. But morally speaking, there wasn’t much for me to do.

Eventually, the girl awoke and guided us to her house before saying goodnight and leaving. I did kiss her goodbye on the cheeks though. Then minutes later I began noticing some excruciating pain in my testicles like I have never felt before. I called a friend who’s five years older to tell him about about the adventure as well as the pain that followed. To which he confidently responded: “You need to jack off.

Really?

Now!

Hm. I did park the car and, being so up there, it didn’t take much to discharge. I remember that the pain didn’t go away right after. But it slowly kept receding until I got home about half an hour later.

Only then was I acquainted with the concept of blue balls. I mean, generally, it never felt good down there — or up there — when fooling around then not finishing. I’m certain that at least once in their lifetime, all men have experienced that agony caused by the sexual anticipation of foreplay followed by… a big fat nothing.

Usually, to be left hanging like that gets us guys frustrated and possibly even kind of angry at the “cock-teaser”. But it’s actually not their fault, you see. They are not required to finish you off, even though knowing about blue balls could make them inclined to be more empathetic and understanding towards the whole affair.

Yet, I had never really known it was a thing until that day.

I still didn’t give it much attention. Having always been active — be it with others or alone — it wasn’t something that frequently occurred, hence there was nothing to worry about. Or so I thought.

This incident reminded me of a school boy who during our mid teens had once experienced extreme pain in his testicles. He consulted a doctor who told him that he needed to relieve himself. The guy was kind of religious and apparently thought that masturbation is a sin, so he never did it... until he got blue balls and was forced to. Ha.

As mentioned, since I constantly discharge I don’t remember having experienced serious, or any, pain again up until fast-forwarding to a few days ago. I was out at the Drum Circle when a seductive woman I know got totally pixilated and started physically flirting. Even though due to, once again, my moral fixation, I didn’t go all the way as I would have in normal circumstances, we still lightly played around, in public. We stayed maybe 45 minutes before we all left.

While heading home on the bike, I began feeling some pain building up around the scrotum area. A familiar sensation which at first I didn’t link to anything. But then after getting home the pain had already reached an uncomfortable level — throughout not just the balls but the entire lower abdomen. This was when I remembered blue balls and what happened 14 years earlier in the car.

Of course I did what I had to do. And again, the swelling pain took maybe 15 or 20 minutes afterwards to subside. Then the thought of writing this article to shed light on such mysterious biological phenomenon seemed like a neat idea. Whether you have no balls at all, are a horny teenage boy, or just curious about what blue balls are, one can safely assume that the following general knowledge would interest a wide variety of readers.

So what are blue balls?

W
hen men are physically turned on, blood flows to the penis and testicles causing erection and swelling — from 25 to 50 percent increase in size. Once there is climax, everything goes back to its original dimensions. But if there is no climax after the stimulation, or they do not ‘finish’, the build-up of blood pressure, medically termed Vasocongestion, causes a temporary fluid congestion.

The fluids are produced in the testicles in order to propel sperm through the many tubes; when they have nowhere to go, the congestion causes swelling. This is physically translated as a dulling pain in the cojones. The pain actually feels like someone squeezing them. Aouch.

Epididymal Hypertension is the medical term for blue balls: “Testicular aching that occurs when the blood in the male’s genitals is retained after prolonged sexual arousal and is not dissipated by an orgasm”. Apparently, it does not occur to all males. Perhaps this is related to the different level of testosterone found in men.

Blue balls is not only the result of unfinished business, but it could also be caused by lack of sex, or ejaculation in general — just like our clogged schoolboy.

What is noteworthy is that without ejaculation, more stress, discomfort, and frustration are likely to complement the physical pain. A reason why some men exaggerate their blue balls situation, trying to make their women feel guilty about it.

Even though waiting or sleeping it off, even cold showers, may work in easing the temporary pain and swelling of blue balls, but if being excited got you to this point, then having an orgasm and just cumming may be the only natural, rational relief. Unless you’re some kind weirdo. Ha.

Let us remember that life is too short to spend it frustrated. It is healthy to have an orgasm or two every day. If you can’t find someone suitable to have it with, know that science has proven that masturbating provides plenty of healthy benefits, including stress relief. Now go fuck each other or yourselves and calm down. You do have my blessing.

Speaking of ejaculation, check The Intertwining of Music and Sexuality ― A Djembefola’s Tale where I am investigating the reason why mine seems to exponentially increase following drum sessions.

The slang expression “blue balls” came to be used when a partner(s) teases a man and leaves him hanging or when a man hasn’t had sex in aeons — describing a state of sexual frustration. ‘Blue’ is punnily suitable as it also means ‘sad’ or ‘depressed’, which could work when the male is trying to make the partner(s) feel sorry for him and get him off. But as mentioned, the phenomenon is scientifically recognised and ‘blue’ in the nomenclature is not just a random colour.

Epididymal Hypertension is colloquially termed “blue balls”; because it is held that the scrotum area may turn a bluish hue from the accumulation of de-oxigenated blood in the testicles. Oxygen-rich blood on the surface of the skin creates a reddish colour, while blood with little oxygen appears blue. Without “uncloging the pipe”, the blood stays in the testicles and scrotum without circulating to the heart and lungs. This decreases the oxygen level which causes the blueness of the skin.

Speaking of, some people’s faces tend to give that same blueish hue after being addicted to heroin for a long time. Back then, I never made the connection with lack of oxygen, yet several people mentioned they would notice this phenomenon on certain faces — as I did. That is, in addition to the original pale white colour usually prevalent among drug abusers. When, conversely, one would get clean, there is indeed a healthy and vibrant reddish hue that seems to replace the blue, or at least the pale white, while lightening up the face.

This colouration change, however, remains different than the infamous blueish purple overdose face, or the pale grey/ashy for those with darker skin tones.

Interestingly, Ladies and Gentlemen, the condition can also affect females. And it is colloquially called “Blue Vulva”. Seriously.

The medical term is “Pelvic Congestion” and it is caused when women are sexually aroused while the vulva, uterus, and ovaries swell with blood. This causes a similar feeling of the heaviness and aching of blue balls, apparently. Just like men, the discomfort dissipates once orgasm is reached, or after some time has elapsed. But if there is no relief, then they become frustrated and blue vulva it is. Fair and square.

This conveniently reminds me of Femme mal baisée, which is a French term describing a frustrated, intolerable, and unsatisfied woman. According to the expression, the reason why those women become unable to be loving is that they never got their healthy dose of sex.

Note that pelvic congestion is different from “Pelvic Congestive Syndrome”, which according this Article is a condition where enlarged varicose veins cause chronic aching in the pelvic region. The pain or discomfort one experiences from (PCS) cannot simply be relieved through orgasm. Bur rather, it is often treated through a procedure called embolization.

Intriguingly, there is not much medical research when it comes to blue balls — or blue vulva. Perhaps because it is a temporary, non-contagious, and non-life-threatening condition, it is not taken seriously by the scientific community. Perhaps also because it doesn’t require therapy, drugs, or any money-making; but the solution simply lies in sexual release.

Such unpopularity makes some people, probably most of them women, think that blue balls is just a myth. Others regard it as an excuse by men to get frisky; or even worse, that the men are just being “big babies” about it. But I’m telling you it is indeed real, and the pain is not fun at all.

On a parallel note, an additional information I learned recently is that one testicle is often slightly larger than the other. This is usually normal and nothing to worry about. However, if you notice that one testicle has enlarged you should ask your doctor to check it. Generally, the right testicle is larger than the left. Also, one testicle (usually the left) often hangs lower than the other.

Likewise, 65 percent of women have the left breast larger than the right, which is the same percentage of men having a left testis hanging lower than the right.

Now you know what blue balls is, what causes it, and how to treat it. Perhaps now you can be more empathetic towards yourself and your partners... males or females.
