Wooden pallets are commonly used to move heavy objects, usually in construction. Once the job is done, they are discarded — thrown away or burnt. With a little bit of creativity, however, the pallets can be upcycled, offering a multitude of day-to-day nifty options to be used for interior and garden design. Since upcycling is a relatively new term (1990), let me briefly share how it differs from recycling. Recycling, as we know, is processing used materials into new materials. Whatever we throw away in our garbage from glass, metal, plastic, and paper is taken to recycling plants to be made into reusable products. These products are normally of lower quality than what they were before being recycled. The process is not really something the average person can do themself or at home. Upcycling, on the other hand, is defined as the process by which waste materials or useless products are converted into new materials or products of better quality and/or a higher environmental value. Unlike recycling, the material itself isn’t broken down and it doesn’t lose its quality in upcycling; it may be reworked, reconstructed, or used differently, as in repurposed. Though the essence of the material remains the same. Check out this next photos series to see the artistic side of upcycling. Also Creative Upcycled Furniture and Creative Bookshelves for more. There is also an additional personal testimony below written much later in 2023 after I finally got the chance to experience the wooden pallets at home in Dahab.
EDIT (December 2023): Everyone has an L-shape couch; most are lower case though. ¯\_(ツ) I first heard about wooden palettes around 2012 when publishing the photo-article Wooden Pallets Creative Upcycling on One Lucky Soul. It was the second year of the blog before starting to share the writings. I had probably seen them before yet didn’t know what they were called, neither how versatile they can be. “Upcycling” was likewise another new concept. There is so much one could do with palettes, as they are easily moved and rearranged. Maybe one day, I would ponder. Fast-forward to last year when my sister, hubby and child left Sinai to go back living in Cairo and stored this comfy couch somewhere around. The two-seater sofa that came with the rented place was — and still is — so narrow, uncomfortable, and inconvenient, the thought of exchanging it with this one felt like a wonderful idea. Et voilà: The house has been pimped. Finally I experience for myself the versatilityof the palettes. Not only one can fully lay down while spreading their legs wide, the foamy cushions are so soft on the body. It also just happened that there is a 30-cm gap between the cushions and the table with the books — seen behind Coucha here, so I filled it with two smaller ones and now it’s her and Floppino’s new favourite cosy spot. Win-Win for all.
